Pound for pound
K and I had a phase when all we did after office hours is go to mall the and play DrumMania all afternoon. It was back when we’re both drummer wannabes and can’t yet afford the rather steep prices of drumming lessons (if I remember correctly, our favorite songs to play were Libra, Monster Tree, and Saccharine Smile).
We both signed up for lessons after a while, but it was him who truly embraced being a drummer. I can play a few notes, but I’ve given up long ago on showing aptitude of any kind with music-related activities–I’m hopelessly tone-deaf. Haha!
K owns his own set of drums, but banging around all day is not a very popular activity amongst the neighborhood, so his drumming time is very limited. Electronic drums are expensive beyond belief, and frankly, I don’t think it’s a worthy investment. Real drums just have more beef and a different kind of adrenaline rush. I didn’t think we should spend that much money for something he might end up not liking anyway.
A few days shy of K’s birthday, CashCashPinoy (a local coupon discount site) posted a deal for Paper Jamz Drums, and I knew I found the perfect present. For good measure though, I showed him the deal and confirmed his interest. He almost bought it for himself, which would’ve ruined the whole thing, but by the time he made his mind up the deal was over and I have a pending order for one of the drums.

Toys for the big boys
He chose Set 2 initially (songs included are It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Two Princes, and What I Like About You), but they sold out before I could place an order. He liked Set 3 (Born to be Wild, Mississippi Queen, and Smoke on the Water), so I got that for him.
I left my cell phone in my jacket at the office that day (not on purpose, I promise) and had to go back to retrieve it. Such a hassle, but it did give me a solid excuse to do everything I needed to pull off the perfect birthday surprise, and I am proud to say, I successfully accomplished (details here).
We claimed the package yesterday, and K is a happy camper:
